The Nanavati-Mehta Commission, which was set up in 2002 by then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to investigate the post-Godhra Train Burning riots, has given a clean chit to the Modi government in its report.

The report was submitted to the Gujarat Chief Minister in 2014 when Anandiben Patel held the position but was tabled in the State Assembly only today. Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja tabled the report in the House. The report mentions that, contrary to claims made by the ‘intellectual’ camp, the riots were not organized.
This was the second part of the Nanavati-Mehta Commission report that was tabled. The first part was submitted in 2008 and covered the Godhra train burning incident. It had concluded that the said incident was part of a “planned conspiracy”. The first part, too, had given a clean chit to Narendra Modi.
Numerous canards have been spread over the years regarding the state government’s alleged involvement in the riots. The latest to do so was The New Yorker which weaved the Gujarat Riots into a grand narrative of Narendra Modi and the BJP being fascists. The report submitted by Retired Justices G T Nanavati and Akshay Mehta dispels all such myth.
