Former Diplomat convicted under Official Secrets Act may have converted to Islam: Reports

Former Diplomat convicted under various provisions of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) for spying on behalf of ISI

On Friday, former Diplomat Madhuri Gupta was convicted by a Delhi Court eight years after her arrest by Delhi Police’s Special Cell for passing classified information to the ISI during her posting in Islamabad in 2010. She was convicted under various sections of the Official Secrets Act (OSA), including spying and wrongful communication of classified information.

Controversial Congress supporter Gaurav Pandhi thought it best to communalize the issue and assert that Gupta would have faced much greater condemnation had she been a Muslim.

However, as it turns out, according to a report from 2010, Madhuri Gupta may have converted to Islam in 2004. “She was really inspired by the teachings of Islam but was scared to announce her new faith,” read a report in the Post. “Her kin has very close relations with a well-known Muslim family of Ashiq Hussain Jafri in Lucknow”. Gupta was reported to have been fasting during Ramzan wearing bangles and rings which are usually worn by the Shia community. “I am fasting and I have great respect for Islam,” she reportedly told the journalist. As per a TOI report, Gupta wanted to convert to Islam but was discouraged by her mother. Although, there are no further reports to substantiate whether or not she eventually did convert.

This is not the first time that the self-proclaimed “Nehruvian Congressman and INC political activist” has been caught peddling lies. During Prime Minister Modi’s Palestine visit too he had lied and got called out. He had even tried to spread rumours during demonetisation and also tried to create a divide by spreading the ‘Dalit vs Upper caste’ narrative with lies.
