A total of 111 antique coins were discovered in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. The coins were found when a portion of ground was being dug for construction work carried out under in Kajitola falling under Marka police station limits.

The workers at the construction site apparently got into an argument when the coins were discovered. An altercation between the workers over dividing the coins among themselves alerted the police. The news spread and eventually the police reached the construction site and took possession of the coins. The coins have been kept at the police station for now, which would be later sent to the archaeological department.
Inspector in charge at the station said that the coins looked like that of the Mughal era, and are made of either gold or some other precious metal.
Similar to this incident, a copper pot full of antique silver coin dating back to the 13th century was unearthed as a group of locals engaged in an old temple reconstruction dug up a pit in Kathur village in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district on 21st July 2018. The pot, containing 329 coins, apparently belonging to the Mughal era, weighing nearly four kgs was found when the ground was being dug to construct the main gate for the Bhairav Temple in the village.
Earlier in the month too, Gold coins belonging to the 12th-century had been found during earth-digging for a road construction in Chhattisgarh’s Kondagaon district. It was reported that a pot containing 57 gold coins, a silver coin, and a gold earring was unearthed on 10th July during the construction of a road between Korkoti and Bedma villages.
