Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs General VK Singh (Retd.) informed parliament that fugitive Nirav Modi’s whereabouts have been ascertained with the help of British Authorities. Singh said that Nirav Modi is currently in the United Kingdom after National Central Bureau Manchester gave inputs about his whereabouts to the National Central Bureau.
Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi have been absconding after both were found complicit in Punjab National Bank fraud that surfaced earlier this year. According to the bank, the fugitives had allegedly cheated the nationalised bank to the tune of over Rs 13,000 crore, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank. Mehul Choksi is currently under self-imposed exile in Antigua and Barbuda, a country with whom India doesn’t have an extradition treaty.
Mehul Choksi’s advocates on 25 December informed Prevention of Money Laundering Act court that their client is willing to sort the issues with banks and is in complete touch with them.
