The BJP has maintained a staunch stance on the issue that banning the practice will uplift Muslim women. In the Parliament as well, during the debate, BJP leader Meenakshi Lekhi called it a matter of ‘human rights violations’.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that the law should not be viewed through the prism of politics and it is not directed against any community or religion.

The Bill has been opposed bitterly by opposition political parties in the Parliament. In a bitter sense of irony, while the Triple Talaq Bill was being discussed, a Madarsa manager, father of 11 children, gave triple talaq to his wife of 19 years.

After the Supreme Court ruled that Triple talaq is unconstitutional, the NDA government had brought an ordinance in September to make it a punishable offence. However, despite the ordinance and the Supreme Court calling it unconstitutional, the cases of triple talaq had not declined.
