Yechury had said yesterday that he would go to Srinagar to meet CPI(M) workers and the lone MLA the party had in the erstwhile state assembly.

Politicians from opposition parties have been engaging in extremely disturbing rhetoric which could imperil a sensitive situation as Jammu & Kashmir slowly returns to normalcy. Despite the narrative that is being peddled on social media and in newsrooms, the newly formed union territory is making peace with recent developments.

However, amidst clear provocation from Pakistan, it’s understandable that the Indian government is exercising caution. It’s also reasonable for the government to not allow the union territory to become a new battleground for petty politics.

Meanwhile, people in Ladakh have wholeheartedly embraced the decision with open arms. A “thanksgiving” ceremony was organized by the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) in Leh on Thursday in celebration of their newly granted Union Territory status.
