Fresh action has started in connection with the 2021 post-poll violence cases in West Bengal. Authorities have begun 458 new enquiries, registered 181 fresh FIRs and reopened 59 cases where final reports had already been filed earlier. The process of reopening and investigation is still going on.
The government pushed after the BJP took power
The move came after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari asked police across the state to apply provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and register FIRs in all pending murder and assault cases linked to the 2021 violence. He also appealed to victims and their families to come forward with complaints, even if they did not have evidence, saying the police would investigate the cases.
These developments have come days after the BJP formed its first government in West Bengal by winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule. The TMC won 80 seats. Since taking charge on May 9, action has also been taken against several TMC leaders in cases related to extortion, violence and land grabbing.
TMC raises concerns over violence
Meanwhile, TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee criticised the Centre over the post-poll violence and said Central forces remained silent during the incidents. He also claimed that TMC candidates and counting agents were removed from counting centres in some constituencies during the 2026 Assembly election counting.
Earlier, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appeared before Chief Justice HC Sujoy Pal in a PIL related to violence after the 2026 election results. She sought immediate protection for people and said incidents of arson and attacks were taking place in the state, claiming that party workers, women, children and minorities were being targeted.
