Mann Ki Baat 134: PM Modi highlights growing interest in astronomy among youth, hails success in athletics

On 31st May, in the latest 134th edition of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted several inspiring stories from across the country, ranging from achievements in athletics to wildlife conservation and community service.

Athletes break records, inspire a new generation

One of the key topics in the programme was India’s growing success in athletics. Referring to the National Senior Athletics Federation Competition in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Modi praised sprinters Gurinder Veer Singh and Animesh Kujur, who broke the national record in the men’s 100-metre race multiple times within two days.

During a conversation with the athletes, both shared how family support, hard work and determination helped them succeed despite doubts that Indians could not compete at the highest level in sprint events. Modi appreciated their friendship and healthy rivalry, saying their achievements would inspire many young athletes.

Interest in astronomy is growing across India

The Prime Minister also spoke about the increasing popularity of astronomy among young people. He mentioned organisations such as the Bangalore Astronomical Society, Astro Kerala, Big Bang Astronomy Club of Rajkot, Jyotirvidya Parisanstha and ISAAC, which are helping students learn more about space and the universe.

He encouraged youngsters to join astronomy clubs and visit planetariums during their vacations.

Special mention for the dolphin rescue

Modi praised a rescue operation in Uttar Pradesh where a Gangetic dolphin trapped in a canal was safely rescued after hours of effort. He said India’s first Ganga Dolphin Rescue Ambulance, developed under the Namami Gange campaign, played a crucial role in saving the animal.

The dolphin was treated and later released into the Rapti River. Modi said protecting dolphins is important for maintaining the biodiversity of the Ganga ecosystem.

Tamil Nadu teachers unique contribution

The Prime Minister also shared the story of Girija Amma, an educationist from Tamil Nadu who inspired students in her schools to contribute one rupee every day for the welfare of Indian soldiers.

The initiative collected nearly ₹40 lakh over a year. Modi appreciated her patriotic spirit and praised the students for supporting the country’s armed forces through small but meaningful contributions.

Apart from these stories, Modi highlighted efforts by citizens working to clean rivers, improve water supply and serve society. He said such initiatives reflect the power of ordinary people to bring positive change and strengthen the nation through collective effort.
