Maharashtra Cyber Police have registered an FIR against Congress leader Bhai Jagtap for sharing an AI-generated video on social media that falsely showed Delhi Police Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sumit Jha resigning over the Jantar Mantar protest. Police said the video was found to be fake after verification, and an investigation into the matter is now underway.
The case, FIR No. 0063/2026, has been registered at the Nodal Cyber Police Station under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act. The action was taken following a complaint filed by BJP Social Media Co-Convenor Nikhil Bhamre.
Fake video shared through X handle
According to the FIR, the AI-generated video was posted through the X handle @Bhaijagtap1. In the dubious video clip, senior Delhi Police officer DCP Sumit Jha was heard saying, “I tender my resignation from the Indian Police Service with immediate effect. The government was expecting me to come out on the street and utter flat-out lies about the students demanding their rights.”
“I was asked to prove them criminals. I cannot remain associated with a system that stops me from speaking the truth and compels me to falsely implicate innocent students,” the officer was heard saying in the fake video.
Officials later confirmed that the video was not real. The complaint states that the video was shared in a manner that could create confusion among the public and spread false information.
Maharashtra Cyber Police are now examining how the AI-generated video was created, shared, and circulated on social media. Officials are also looking into all the circumstances related to the case as part of the ongoing investigation.
Official fact check confirmed the video was fake
Before the FIR was registered, the PIB Fact Check unit and Delhi Police had already clarified that the viral video claiming the resignation of DCP Sumit Jha was completely fake and created using artificial intelligence.

Both agencies also warned the public not to believe or circulate the misleading content and advised people to verify such claims before sharing them online.
BJP demands public apology
Reacting to the incident, BJP’s Maharashtra chief spokesperson Navnath Ban said Bhai Jagtap should immediately remove the video from social media account and issue a public apology to the people of Maharashtra for spreading false information.
Ban said that spreading fake AI-generated content and creating confusion in society is a serious matter. He added that legal action should be taken against anyone who shares such misleading information. According to him, political differences are a normal part of democracy, but misleading people by using fabricated AI videos cannot be accepted. He also said those responsible should face action under the applicable legal provisions.
