West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari has announced financial assistance for the family of Sujit Mondal, who was brutally murdered by a Muslim mob in Dhulian, Murshidabad. The state government has also taken action against police officers over their handling of the case and handed the murder probe to the CID.

The accused Samiul Sheikh, Tajkira Bibi and Johnny Sheikh have been arrested in connection with the murder. They are currently in police custody as investigators try to find out the reason behind the killing, the relationship between Sujit and the accused, and whether the crime was planned.
Sujit went missing on 28th August
Sujit, who lived in Ward 13 of Dhulian Municipality under Shamsherganj police station, went missing after leaving his home on the morning of 28th August. His family approached the police, but the initial response has now come under scrutiny.
His body was later found cut into pieces, with parts recovered from a feeder canal near Ballalpur Ghat in Farakka last Thursday. Police are still searching for the remaining body parts. On Sunday, 6th September, Murshidabad Range DIG Ajit Singh Yadav visited Sujit’s home and met his family.
Investigators believe Sujit entered a rented house at the Dhulian Dak Bungalow intersection with Samaul Haque at around 7:38 am on 28th August. Police estimate that he was killed at around 10 am.
Action by the govt
The state government has suspended ASI Sumanta Kumar Das, in-charge of Dhulian Outpost, and SI Shoiful Alam, second officer of Shamsherganj Police Station, for negligence. Shamsherganj IC Subrata Ghosh has been line-closed, and the Zonal IG will examine his role.
Farakka SDPO Sheikh Shamsuddin is being transferred as a punishment, while Jangipur Police District SP Surinder Singh has received a strict warning from the Home Department. A new IC for Shamsherganj Police Station is also being appointed.
The government has announced Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for Sujit’s family. His wife, Sumona Mondal, may also be offered a home guard job in the state police if she agrees and meets the minimum qualification.
Suvendu strongly condemned the manner in which Sujit was killed and his body was dismembered. He said the case must be investigated properly and those responsible should receive exemplary punishment.
