Tensions erupted in Dehangari Jamalpur village in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh following stone-pelting by Muslims at a Durga Puja Pandal. The incident took place on Friday, 16th October, in the Manikpur police station area, when the Muslim community ‘objected’ to the music being played during the evening aarti. Several people were injured, and police have registered a case against six named accused identified as Asgar Ali, Afzal Ali, Afsar Ali, Haider Ali, Sarvar Ali and Faizan Ali and unidentified women from their households.

How the dispute started at the Durga Puja Pandal

According to media reports, the incident occurred around 9 pm after the evening aarti at the Navdurga Puja pandal. Children were enjoying the bhajan while prasad was being distributed. The muslims living in the area ‘objected’ to the volume.

The objection then escalated into an argument, followed by abuses and physical violence by the Muslim community. The accused have attacked the devotees with sticks, bricks and stones. The complaint also reveals that the attackers damaged the Goddess Durga idol, overturned the platform decorated for the Navgraha, and destroyed a kalash, a sound system, and a nearby e-rickshaw.

Some reports also suggest that a young woman present at the pandal was harassed and her clothes were torn by the Muslims. Women from the nearby Muslim households also threw bricks and stones from the rooftops at the devotees in the Pandal.

Several injured, five accused arrested

Police personnel reached the village, followed by a team led by Inspector Pankaj Kumar Rai and Circle Officer Shiv Narayan Vaish. They intervened to bring the situation under control and sent the injured to a community health centre in Kalakankar for treatment.

Based on a complaint filed by Ankit Mishra, police registered a case against Asgar Ali, Afzal Ali, Afsar Ali, Haider Ali, Sarvar Ali and Faizan Ali, along with unidentified Muslim women. Police arrested five of the named accused, Asgar Ali, Afzal Ali, Afsar Ali, Haider Ali and Sarvar Ali. Faizan Ali fled the scene.

Several Hindus were injured in the clash, including Santosh Kumar Mishra, Manoj Kumar Mishra, Sarita Mishra, Satyam Saroj, Lucky Sharma, Munna Saroj, Manki Saroj, Mamta Saroj and Basanti Patel. Five injured people were referred to a medical college because their condition was serious. Some of the accused also sustained injuries.

A police officer said, “Five people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused, and further legal action is in progress.”
