BSF stops fencing along Bangladesh border to ‘prevent tension’ with the country

The fencing drive along the Indo-Bangladesh border has come to a halt amidst objections by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The Indian Border Security Forcer(BSF) said on Friday that the fencing work that was being done along the international border at Sukhdevpur in Malda’s Baishnabnagar has been stopped to avoid tension between the two countries.

The BSF started setting up a single barbed-wire fencing on the open stretches along the Indo- Bangladesh border to stop infiltration. However, tensions flared up between the BSF and the BGB on Monday after the latter objected to the fencing. On Tuesday afternoon, the BSF reportedly stopped the fencing work.

”Since the fencing work is not urgent, we are keeping it suspended for some time to avoid unnecessary tension, conflict and confusion. It will start soon, but we are not setting any deadline”, told a senior Officer, BSF South Bengal Frontier.

A high level meeting was held between the BSF and the BGB on Thursday at the integrated check post at Petrapole in order to address the ongoing conflict regarding the border fencing by the BSF.
