On Friday (2nd January), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has written to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Ladakh in connection with the abduction of a minor Buddhist girl.
According to the statutory body, a minor tribal girl belonging to the Buddhist community was abducted on 26th December last year by a Muslim man. Two days later, a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged in connection with the case on 28th December.
The case was registered under Section 137(2) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.
Following the initial investigation, the police recovered the minor Buddhist girl from Srinagar. She was found in a state of mental trauma and is currently under the supervision of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
NHRC pointed out that the sensitive case is not receiving the seriousness it warrants from the Ladakh administration and sought a detailed action-taken report from the police and the local administration within 7 days.
“The allegations made in the complaint prima facie seem to be violations of the human rights of the victim,” the letter stated.
“The Bench of the National Human Rights Commission, presided by Shri Priyank Kanoongo, Hon’ble Member, has taken cognizance u/s 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, in the matter,” it emphasised.
