The US is pressing G7 allies to impose tariffs on countries still buying Russian oil, with India a key target.

"Navarro's claims are hypocritical. India's legal, sovereign purchases of Russian oil for energy security do not violate international law. The US, while pressuring India, continues to import billions in Russian goods, like uranium, exposing a clear double standard," the community note on Peter Navarro's post read.

India has saved over $17 billion since 2022 by purchasing cheaper Russian crude. More importantly, its imports have played a stabilising role in the global market.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India in December amid rising U.S. pressure. As Trump doubles tariffs on Indian goods over Russian oil imports, New Delhi has defended its energy security, strengthening ties with Moscow despite Western criticism and sanctions threats.

Donald Trump criticised India for importing Russian oil but claimed ignorance about the US still doing business with Moscow.
