The blast was loud enough to be heard from several blocks away and triggered a chain fire that engulfed three nearby vehicles, sparking chaos in one of the most crowded localities of the national capital.
According to officials from the Delhi Fire Department, they received multiple calls about “blast-like sounds” shortly after 6 PM. Within minutes, seven fire tenders and ambulances were rushed to the spot. Videos from the scene show plumes of black smoke billowing into the evening sky as panicked locals fled the area.
Preliminary reports suggest that the explosion originated from a parked car, though the exact cause remains unclear. A senior Delhi Police officer confirmed that forensic and bomb disposal teams have been deployed to ascertain whether the explosion was accidental or deliberate.
The Delhi Police’s Special Cell has also reached the site, cordoning off the area and urging the public to stay away. Early unverified social media posts have speculated about a possible terror link, though no official confirmation has been issued so far.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos, with broken glass scattered on the road, charred vehicles, and sirens echoing through the narrow lanes around the Red Fort. “The blast was so strong that we thought it was an earthquake,” said a local shopkeeper.
As of now, several people are reported injured, and emergency teams are conducting rescue operations. Police have appealed for calm and assured that every angle, including sabotage or technical malfunction, is being investigated.
The incident comes at a time when security in Delhi is already on high alert following recent intelligence inputs about potential threats to key landmarks.
