Kerala: Violent clashes erupt across Kerala after LDF suffers setback in local body polls, CPI(M) activists vandalise Congress office in Eramala

Kerala witnessed political violence in various places, particularly in northern districts, following the announcement of local body poll results, as confirmed by the police on Sunday (14th December). The left suffered huge setback at the elections, as Congress-led UDF won majority of local bodies, while NDA also made significant inroads including winning the Thiruwanantapuram Municipal Corporation. As per reports, CPI(M) vandalised the Congress Office at Indira Gandhi Bhavan in Eramala in the Kozhikode district.

An FIR registered in connection with the incident stated that around 200 people marched towards the Congress office armed with dangerous weapons. They vandalised the building and a statue of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The damage caused to the property has been estimated to be around ₹5 lakh. The situation was further aggravated after the United Democratic Front (UDF) members also gathered at the spot. Police personnel were deployed to control the situation.

An incident of stone pelting at a UDF victory procession was reported in Malad, in which several persons were injured. In another incident of violence at Sultan Bathery in Wayanad district, a case was registered after a car carrying a UDF activist and his family members was attacked by around 40 CPI(M) workers.

Similarly, in Panoor in Kannur district, houses of several Muslim League activists were reportedly attacked by CPI(M) workers. Also, vehicles parked at the houses were vandalised. Panoor Police said that the violence started after a UDF victory procession was stopped by some CPI(M) workers carrying swords and daggers. Several UDF members sustained injuries in the violence.

Similar clashes between the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) members also happened in Ulikkal in the Kannur district, which was controlled after police intervention. An LDF victory procession was attacked by CPI(M) activists in Bedakom in Kasaragod district. Some police personnel, who intervened in the clash, also sustained injuries. Clashes also erupted between CPI(M) and BJP workers in Neyyattinkara in the Thiruvananthapuram district.

Ruling-LDF suffered a setback in the local body polls

The ruling LDF has suffered a setback in the local body election results as the Congress-led UDF won 649 local bodies out of a total 1200. The UDF also won 505 out of 951 grama panchayats, 79 out of 152 block panchayats, 7 out of 14 district panchayats, 54 out of 87 municipalities, and 4 out of 6 corporations. The elections also proved to be historic for the BJP-led NDA as the alliance won 50 out of 101 municipal corporation seats in Thiruvananthapuram, for the first time. This comes after the BJP won its first-ever Lok Sabha seat in the state last year.
