Patna Police arrested Rajesh Ranjan, an independent MP from Bihar’s Purnea, famously known as Pappu Yadav, late on Friday, 6th February, after a dramatic standoff at his residence. The arrest was carried out following a court order linked to a long-running forgery and fraud case dating back to 1995. Police officials said the action came after repeated non-appearance by the MP during court hearings.

A large police team of around 50 personnel reached Yadav’s Mandiri residence in Patna at about 10:30 pm. Police informed him that they had come to carry out a court order related to property attachment.
Yadav initially refused to go with the police at night and asked them to return in the morning. As the situation escalated, supporters gathered outside the house, raised slogans, and demanded to see the warrant. Heated arguments broke out between the crowd and police personnel.
During the standoff, Yadav accused the administration of targeting him and claimed there was a conspiracy against his life. He told police that the court had asked him to appear on Saturday and that he was ready to respect the legal process. He also claimed that a police inspector named Deepak arrived in civil clothes with a revolver. Despite his resistance, the police arrested him around 12:15 am.
After the arrest, Yadav was taken to IGIMS hospital at around 12:30 am for a medical check-up. City SP Bhanu Pratap said the arrest was made strictly as per court directions. He clarified that if there is an arrest warrant or attachment order, police are legally allowed to arrest at any time.
The MP was later kept in police custody at Gardanibagh police station and will be produced before the court. Further action will be taken as per the court’s instructions.
Police officials also dismissed claims of any conspiracy, saying they were only following the law. The MP-MLA court had earlier issued attachment orders against three accused in the case, including Pappu Yadav, after arrest warrants and public notices failed to ensure their appearance. The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for Saturday.
What is the 1995 case
The case goes back to 1995, when a dispute arose over a house in the Gardanibagh area of Patna. The complainant, Vinod Bihari Lal, said that Pappu Yadav rented his house by misleading him and later used it as a Member of Parliament’s office without informing him. When the landlord came to know about this, tensions grew, and an FIR was registered.
The case, recorded as Gardanibagh Police Station Case No. 552/1995, includes charges of fraud, forgery, house trespass, criminal intimidation, and criminal conspiracy.
The matter has been pending in the MP-MLA Special Court for years. Court records show that Yadav was summoned several times but did not appear, leading the court to first order property attachment and later issue an arrest warrant, which resulted in his midnight arrest on Friday.
