Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma files Rs 500 crore defamation lawsuit against Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi, and Jitendra Singh

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma informed on Tuesday, February 10, that he has filed a Rs 500 crore defamation lawsuit against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against him through a press conference.

The action follows a February 4 press conference where the above mentioned Congress leaders levelled serious charges against CM Sarma, which he described as baseless and politically motivated.

On the same day, Sarma had warned of starting legal proceedings against the Congress leaders.

Sarma has stated that he will pursue both civil and criminal lawsuits against the Congress leaders, because the allegations made by them are not only baseless but also deliberately aimed at damaging his personal and political reputation.

Congress leader Debabrata Saikia and some other leaders were also involved in the press conference. It is not clear yet whether they have been named in the lawsuit.

On February 4, the Congress leaders held a press conference in New Delhi, where they accused the CM of corruption and land encroachment. The Congress leaders claimed that Sarma, his family members and relatives have encroached upon around 12000 bighas (3960 acres) of land across all districts of Assam. Gogoi had added that they have also launched a website to track and list all the corrupt activities of the CM.

So far the Congress party or the above-mentioned leaders have not responded to the news of Sarma filing the lawsuit.
