Amidst a raging war between the US and Iran, social media is replete with AI-generated propaganda images and videos. Nikita Bier, the Product Head of X (formerly Twitter), revealed on Wednesday (4th March) that a network of accounts operating from Pakistan was posting fabricated videos of the war. Bier said that the network has been dismantled by X.
Nikita Bier stated that an X user from Pakistan was operating 31 coordinated accounts that circulated AI-generated war footage. These accounts were hacked and their names changed in late February to “Iran War Monitor” and derivatives.
“Last night, we found a guy in Pakistan that was managing 31 accounts posting AI war videos. All were hacked and the usernames were changed on Feb 27 to “Iran War Monitor” or some derivative. We are getting much faster at detecting this—and also eliminating the incentive to do this,” Bier wrote on X.

In response to a question by an Indian X user whether X is eliminating accounts peddling pro-Iran war disinformation or similar action is being taken regarding pro-Israel content as well, Nikita Bier said, “In 99% of cases, it’s just people looking to game monetization. But to answer your question, yes we did a sweep of “IDF Girl” accounts that were run out of Pakistan recently. The only thing they care about is what gets impressions—not the political leaning.”

Notably, X is cracking down on AI-generated war videos. On 3rd March, Elon Musk-owned social media platform X announced a 90-day suspension from its Creator Revenue Sharing programme for creators posting videos generated using artificial intelligence (AI) of armed conflicts without disclosing that the content was synthetically created.
X’s crackdown on AI-generated war disinformation came at a time when the Middle East is witnessing a rapidly escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Israel and the US struck Iran’s nuclear and military establishments. In those initial strikes, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, and several top leaders were killed.
Iran retaliated and launched missile attacks targeting locations across the region, including areas hosting US military installations in countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Several locations in Israel, including its capital, Tel Aviv, have also been targeted during the escalation.
