2020 anti-Hindu Delhi riots: Court grants 10-day interim bail to UAPA-accused Sharjeel Imam for brother’s wedding

A Delhi court has granted 10-day interim bail to UAPA accused Sharjeel Imam, allowing him to attend his brother’s wedding. The relief was given by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai, who heard Imam’s plea seeking temporary release from jail.

Imam, who has been in Tihar Jail since 2020, will be out from 20th March to 30th March. The court allowed his release on humanitarian grounds but made it clear that he must surrender once the bail period ends. Strict conditions have been imposed on Imam, and any violation could lead to the cancellation of the relief.

He is currently facing charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in connection with a larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.

Imam gave provocative speeches in the protests leading to the 2020 anti-Hindu Delhi riots. He called for a nationwide ‘chakka jam’ and stated his intentions to create unrest so that the ‘chicken’s neck’ corridor that joins India to the North-Eastern states, gets taken over, leading to complete separation of the NE states from mainland India.

The riots, which broke out in February 2020 in parts of Northeast Delhi, had led to widespread violence. At least 53 people lost their lives, and over 700 were injured during the clashes that took place amid protests against the CAA and the NRC.
