Ahead of the upcoming Vidhan Sabha election in Assam, social media is rife with false claims about BJP workers vandalising party office in the State.
The disinformation was initially peddled by a Congress spokesperson named Reetam Singh. In a tweet on Friday (20th March), he claimed, “BJP Party Office vandalised after 30 of the 90 BJP tickets were given to ex- Congress people.”
Singh brazened out, “Late night emergency meeting in Guwahati by Himanta Biswa Sarma against public out cry of BJP Assam Vice President Jayanta Kumar Das. He has threatened Himanta to dare to enter the Vajpayee Bhawan Head Office in Jayanta’s Dispur Constituency.”

“Old BJP-RSS Karyakartas are in the street in revolt. Mass resignation of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha for being completely sidelined while Congress gave 10 tickets to the youth leaders from the party background,” he added.
“Old BJP MLAs and Leaders openly calling Himanta as chor, syndicate mafia. Amit Shah in crisis management! Sarbananda Sonwal planning a coup d’etat from Delhi on Himanta’s Election hope,” the Congress spokesperson continued his conspiracy theories.
The lies peddled by Reetam Singh about the Assam BJP and its CM Himanta Biswa Sarma found many takers. One of them was MK Venu, a Founding Editor of the leftist propaganda outlet The Wire.
While amplifying the fake news, he claimed, “No TV channel will report this happening within the BJP. If it were the Congress party, the media by now would have declared another huge setback to Rahul Gandhi!”
In reality, the incident did not take place in Assam as alleged by Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh. The clash instead occurred on 16th March in the Alipurduars district of West Bengal.
Reportedly, local BJP karyakartas were aghast after an election ticket was given to Paritosh Roy, a politician with close ties with the ruling Trinamool Congress government.

Does Cong now pay @svaradarajan to run a fake news outlet ? pic.twitter.com/plRSNsjmwW
However, this did not stop the Congress ecosystem from taking the incident out of context and weaponising it to target the Assam BJP and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
