Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announces 2530% increase in stipend for nursing interns on International Nurses Day

On the occasion of International Nurses Day, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced a major increase in the stipend given to nursing interns working in Delhi government hospitals. The stipend has been raised from just ₹500 to ₹13,150 per month, ending a wait of nearly 27 years for nursing students seeking better financial support during their internship period.

According to the Delhi government, around 180 nursing interns will benefit from this decision. The move was approved during a cabinet meeting and is being seen as an important step toward improving the working conditions of nursing professionals in the capital.

The stipend will go up by a massive ₹12,650 from the current ₹500, which is a 2530% increase.

Interns from three major hospitals to benefit

The revised stipend will apply to nursing interns studying in the three nursing colleges attached to government-run hospitals Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Lok Nayak Hospital, and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

Officials said the increase would provide much-needed financial relief to students who spend long hours working in wards and assisting doctors and senior nurses in patient care.

CM visits LNJP Hospital on International Nurses Day

To mark International Nurses Day, the Chief Minister also made a surprise visit to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital. During the inspection, she visited different wards, reviewed hospital facilities, and interacted with nursing staff members working there.

She also met nurses who had come from states such as Kerala, Rajasthan, and Punjab, and praised their contribution to Delhi’s healthcare system. Gupta said nurses play a very important role in patient care and in keeping the healthcare system running smoothly.

Appointment letters distributed to healthcare staff

Along with the stipend hike announcement, the Delhi government also handed over appointment letters to 1,388 nursing officers and 41 paramedical staff members. The recruitment is expected to strengthen healthcare services across government hospitals in the national capital.

Move seen as a step towards fairness

For years, nursing interns had been receiving very low stipends compared to MBBS interns, even though they regularly handled critical responsibilities in hospitals. The latest decision is being viewed as a major effort to reduce that gap and give nursing interns better financial recognition for their work.

The Chief Minister assured healthcare workers that the Delhi government would continue working to improve workplace conditions and protect the rights of nurses and other medical staff across the city.
