On Thursday (14th May), the BJP government in Delhi announced several measures to cut fuel consumption after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to take austerity measures amidst the ongoing West Asia crisis. In this vein, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that all Delhi government offices will adopt a work-from-home system for two days every week.
In addition to work-from-home, the Delhi government is also pushing for the use of public transport, virtual meetings and fuel conservation across departments. To ensure effective implementation of these fuel-cutting measures, CM Gupta said that a ‘No Vehicle Day’ will be observed weekly, and employees opting for public transport will be given incentives.
The Delhi CM has also declared that the fuel quota for government officials would be reduced by 20%. At present, government officials receive 200 and 250 litres of petrol or diesel every month.
Moreover, the government has also cut the size of convoys used by ministers and senior officials by half to save fuel. The officials who receive fuel allowances will get a 10% incentive if they opt for public transport instead of official vehicles
