“If we’re not here, it will take a second…”: FIR against Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata over speech threatening Hindus with Muslim attacks if they supported BJP

On Friday (12th June), an FIR has been filed against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, over her March 2026 speech wherein she was reported to have ‘warned’ Bengali Hindus that if she goes out of power due to them voting for the BJP, the Muslim community will target them. She issued this veiled warning to Hindus during a protest rally against Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

“It is because of us (TMC) that you (Hindus) are all doing well. If a day comes when we are no longer here, it will take just one second,” Banerjee said. She then warned: “If a certain community (Muslims) unites and surrounds you, it will take just one second; they will completely finish you off,” Mamata had reportedly said.

On 20th May 2026, a Kolkata resident, Tushar Kanti Das, filed a complaint against Mamata Banerjee at Netaji Nagar Police Station in South Kolkata.

The complainant alleged that Banerjee’s speech carried the potential of creating fear, misunderstanding, and tension in the poll-bound state at that time.

Based on this complaint, the Kolkata Police has registered an FIR on 12th June.

Banerjee has been booked under BNS Section 351(2) (Criminal intimidation), Section 196 (promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between different groups based on religion, race, caste, language, or place of birth), and other relevant sections.
