On Sunday afternoon, 6th September a five-storey building collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, leaving at least one person dead and several others injured. The building was being used as a boys’ PG, also known as ‘Hostel Daze’, and several people, including students, are feared to be trapped under the rubble.

The collapse took place in the South Delhi area, which is close to Delhi’s South Campus and is known for its large number of student PGs, hostels and eateries. Rescue teams have so far pulled out six people from the debris and shifted them to hospitals. Their condition was not immediately known. Officials later said that three of the injured were in critical condition.
25-30 people feared trapped
Eyewitnesses at the site said that around 25 to 30 people could still be trapped under the rubble. However, official confirmation on the exact number of people trapped is awaited.
A large rescue operation is underway at the site, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, CAT Ambulance and other emergency services working to find and rescue those still inside.
The Delhi Police said the collapsed structure was around 40 to 50 years old. It had a basement and five floors above it. According to the police, repair work was being carried out in the basement when the building came down. Search and rescue operations are continuing.
Officials reach spot
Authorities received a PCR call about the incident at around 1.34 pm, following which rescue teams were sent to the location.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken cognisance of the incident and directed officials to make sure that everyone trapped inside is rescued safely. She also said the safety and well-being of citizens remain the government’s highest priority.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bansuri Swaraj and MLA Anil Sharma have also reached the spot and are overseeing the rescue operation.
Officials have asked people to stay away from the collapse site, saying that a large number of bystanders are making it harder for rescue teams to work. Paramilitary personnel have also been deployed to keep the area clear and ensure that ambulances can move without obstruction.
The rescue operation remains underway as teams continue to search through the rubble for survivors.
