Two Congress leaders found themselves at the centre of an awkward political episode after an unannounced visit to BSP chief Mayawati’s residence in Lucknow ended without a meeting. The leaders reportedly arrived without prior approval, only to be stopped by her security personnel and sent back.
Rajendra Pal Gautam and Barabanki MP Tanuj Punia had reached Mayawati’s residence claiming that they wished to enquire about her health, citing her reduced public appearances in recent times. However, questions quickly surfaced over whether the visit carried a larger political message amid renewed speculation about opposition equations in Uttar Pradesh.
As media curiosity intensified, Punia dismissed suggestions that the duo had come as emissaries of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He rejected reports that any message from the Congress high command was intended to be conveyed to the BSP chief.
The Congress leadership, however, distanced itself from the development almost immediately. Party leaders clarified that the visit had not been sanctioned and made it clear that no authorised delegation had been sent. The Uttar Pradesh Congress leadership subsequently sought explanations from the two leaders over what it described as an unauthorised initiative.
The incident has once again reignited conversations around opposition politics in Uttar Pradesh. For years, Congress has explored possibilities of wider anti-BJP alignments in the state, seeing Dalit support as a key electoral factor. While Congress and the Samajwadi Party worked together in recent elections, Mayawati has consistently maintained distance from formal alliance arrangements and has avoided aligning herself with either the ruling NDA or the broader opposition bloc.
The unexpected visit, and the swift disapproval that followed, has now added another curious chapter to the constantly shifting political landscape of Uttar Pradesh.
