Police broke open the main gate after residents and family members raised concerns over a strong foul smell coming from inside the house.
The deceased have been identified as retired school teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50; their 25-year-old daughter, Kandi Chakraborty; and their 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty.
Bodies found at different places
Rangpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Quader said the four bodies were found at different places inside and around the house.
Ganapati Chakraborty’s body was found on the roof. The bodies of his wife Pritilata and daughter Kandi were found on the stairs leading towards the third floor. Their son Priyam was found lying under a bed.
Police said the house had remained locked from the outside for some time. Residents became suspicious when they did not see any activity from the family, and a strong smell started coming from inside.
After being informed, police reached the spot, broke the lock on the main gate and entered the house. They then recovered all four bodies.
Family last spoke on Thursday
Pritilata Chakraborty’s sister, Pooja Chakraborty, said she last spoke to the family over the phone on Thursday night, 20th August.
She said that when she could not contact anyone on Saturday, she went to Ganapati Chakraborty’s house with her husband at around 9 pm. When they reached the house, they found the main gate locked from the outside.
Pooja then called Bangladesh’s emergency number 999 and was asked to contact the Kotwali police station. Police later arrived and broke open the lock.
Ganapati Chakraborty had retired from Rangpur District School in December last year. After retirement, he regularly provided medical services from a homoeopathy chamber at Rangpur Cooperative Market.
His daughter, identified in reports as Kandi Chakraborty, had completed her Master’s degree in English from Carmichael College. His son Priyam was a fifth-grade student at Rangpur Zilla School.
CID and forensic teams begin the investigation
Police and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) teams are collecting evidence from the house to find out how the four family members died.
OC Nazmul Quader said the main gate was locked from the outside when police arrived. He said CID investigators are gathering evidence from the scene and an investigation has already begun.
Police are looking into different possibilities, including a planned murder, robbery or a family tragedy. Rangpur CID in-charge Sumit Chowdhury said robbery was being considered in the initial stage of the investigation, but the real reason would only become clear after a detailed probe.
The bodies have been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police said the exact cause and time of death will be known after the post-mortems and the completion of the investigation.
The incident comes amid continuing concerns over attacks and violence targeting members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh following the political unrest and change of government in August 2024. In this case, however, investigators have not yet established the motive behind the deaths or whether the family’s Hindu identity was connected to the crime.
