Hindu man from UP says he was taken to Assam, forcibly converted to Islam, and forced to marry Muslim girl, case filed under anti-conversion law

A 25-year-old man from Mau district in Uttar Pradesh has filed a case claiming that he was forcibly converted to Islam and married to a woman after being taken to Assam, police said on Saturday, 15th November.

According to police officials, the victim, Vishal Singh, worked in a dental clinic in Mau city. Based on his complaint, a case was registered on Wednesday, 12th November, under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

Additional Superintendent of Police Anoop Kumar stated that the matter is under investigation to determine the exact circumstances in which he was forced to change his religion. He added that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found responsible.

Vishal’s family said they approached the court after police failed to act on their complaint. Based on the court’s direction, the case was finally registered. Vishal’s mother, Rinki, in her petition, stated, her son started working at a dental clinic in 2022, where he met a woman named Sunaina Parveen, 22, from Muradpur village in Ambedkar Nagar district.

Over time, Sunaina took Vishal with her to her village. When he later returned home, she came to his house along with the police and attacked him.

The family claims that Sunaina trapped Vishal in a relationship and took him to her home in Ambedkar Nagar. There, for almost two years, he was kept under pressure and ill-treated. Afterwards, Sunaina and her family took him to her grandmother’s house in Assam.

The most serious incident took place at that location. Vishal said Sunaina’s father and relatives forced him to convert to Islam, made him marry Sunaina according to Muslim rituals, and compelled him to offer namaz in a mosque. They even recorded videos of the conversion and the wedding ceremony.

Continuously harassed and troubled, Vishal finally managed to escape and reached home in Mau in July 2025. He narrated everything to his family and showed them the video as proof. The family claimed they went to the Kotwali police station and even to the Superintendent of Police with their complaint, but received no response.

They said they kept quiet earlier because of threats from Sunaina’s family and a lack of police support. The SP said that a thorough investigation has started to uncover the truth and assured that anyone found guilty will not be spared.
