‘If I am alive today, it is because of PM Modi and HM Shah’: Nupur Sharma says she and her family would have been killed otherwise

On 14th March, former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma said that she is alive today because Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah assured her safety. Speaking at the Mahila Sammelan organised by the Delhi chapter of Sewa Bharti, Sharma spoke about the hardships she has endured over the past several years.

Says she has been living without freedom for four years

Addressing the gathering, Nupur Sharma said that only a handful of women might be going through a life as painful as hers. She stated that she has been living without freedom for the past four years but remains alive and safe due to the support and protection provided by the country’s leadership.

She said, “I do not think any sister may be living a life more painful than mine. It has been four years since I have been living after losing my freedom. But if your sister is breathing here today, if she is alive and safe, it is only because this country has Prime Minister Shri Narendra Bhai Modi and the respected Home Minister Amit Bhai Shah.”

Credits top leadership for her safety

Sharma further said that without the protection ensured by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, neither she nor her family would have been alive today. “Otherwise, your sister would not have been alive today, and neither would her family,” she added.

Nupur Sharma’s statement during TV debate was twisted by Mohammad Zubair of Alt News

Mohammad Zubair, self-styled fact-checker and co-founder of propaganda website Alt News, played a central role in triggering the chain of events that ultimately led to the suspension of Nupur Sharma from the BJP. Furthermore, it led to the murder of Kanhaiya Lal and Umesh Kolhe for supporting Sharma. There were riots across the country against Sharma.

In May 2022, Sharma appeared on a TV debate on Times Now. During the debate, Tasleem Ahmed Rehmani, a panellist, used derogatory remarks against Lord Shiva. As a counter, Sharma quoted some religious text. The matter did spark controversy, but it was Mohammad Zubair who trimmed the video, removed Rehmani’s comment and presented it as if Nupur Sharma had insulted Prophet Mohammed and Islam.

Zubair deliberately stoked religious tensions across the country. His so-called “fact-checking” was, in reality, a calculated act of provocation that painted a target on the backs of not only Nupur Sharma but also ordinary citizens like Kanhaiya Lal and Umesh Kolhe who expressed solidarity with her. Zubair’s actions ignited a frenzy among Islamist extremists, many of whom openly called for violence, including beheadings, under the slogan “Sar Tan Se Juda.”

Since then, Nupur Sharma has been living under protection while Rehmani is roaming free and participating in debates.
