Born Carlos Ray Norris on 10 March 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma, Chuck Norris rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most recognisable figures in action entertainment. After serving in the United States Air Force, he pursued martial arts, earning black belts in multiple disciplines, including Tang Soo Do, Taekwondo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He founded his own Chun Kuk Do style and became a world champion in karate competitions during the 1960s and early 1970s.
Norris transitioned to acting, gaining early attention for his role alongside Bruce Lee in the 1972 film Way of the Dragon. He went on to star in a string of successful action films in the 1980s, including the Missing in Action series, The Delta Force, and Lone Wolf McQuade. His longest-running success came with the television series Walker, Texas Ranger, in which he played the titular Cordell Walker, a principled Texas Ranger who dispensed justice with martial arts prowess and moral conviction.
Beyond his on-screen career, Norris became a global pop-culture phenomenon through the “Chuck Norris Facts” internet meme that emerged in the mid-2000s. These humorous, hyperbolic statements portrayed him as an invincible superhuman, like “Chuck Norris doesn’t do push-ups; he pushes the Earth down” and “Death once had a near-Chuck-Norris experience.” The jokes, embraced by fans and even referenced by Norris himself, cemented his image as the ultimate tough guy.
In later years, Norris remained active in fitness advocacy, writing, and conservative political commentary, while continuing to train and inspire followers well into his eighties.
