Legendary singer Asha Bhosle passes away a day after she was hospitalised in Mumbai

Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle has died at the age of 92. She passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, her son Anand Bhosle confirmed.

She had been hospitalised yesterday suffering from extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. She reportedly experienced cardiac and respiratory issues. The singer had not been keeping well for the last few months and was brought to the hospital in a critical state. She was admitted to the ICU on Saturday night.

The last rites of the singer will be conducted tomorrow.

One of India’s most versatile and prolific vocalists, Asha Bhosle enjoyed a career spanning more than seven decades. She recorded over 12,000 songs in more than 20 languages. Born in 1933 into the musical Mangeshkar family, Asha began singing professionally at the age of 9. 

Renowned for her collaborations with composer R D Burman, she provided the soundtrack to generations of Bollywood films and regional cinema with her distinctive voice and remarkable range.

Asha Bhosle received several accolades including two National Film Awards, four BFJA Awards, eighteen Maharashtra State Film Awards, nine Filmfare Awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award and a record seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. In 2000, she was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest award in the field of cinema.

All four sisters in the Mangeshkar family, Late Lata Mangeshkar, Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar are prominent singers.
