On 11th November, a stray dog went on a biting spree in Malegaon Tani village of Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh and bit 12 people including a young girl. According to media reports, seven of the 12 injured were women. All the victims were rushed to the district hospital out of which nine were admitted and the remaining were discharged after treating wounds and administering anti-rabies injections. The incident has sparked fresh concerns over the increasing population of stray dogs in the region.
According to reports, the stray dog suddenly began attacking people on Tuesday morning in the village lanes. Locals tried to chase the dog away but it continued biting people. Within a few hours, 12 people across different parts of the village were injured.
Speaking to the media, Civil Surgeon Dr Aniruddh Kaushal said that all the victims were given anti-rabies injections and their condition was stable. Furthermore, he added that such incidents often increase after the monsoon as dogs turn aggressive due to illness or hunger.
Villagers expressed concerns over stray dogs roaming around in the area for the past few days. They had complained to the administration but no action was taken. The Gram Panchayat informed the Animal Husbandry Department about the incident after which a team was sent to capture the dog.
Khandwa Municipal Corporation has appealed to the residents to immediately seek medical treatment if a dog bite incident happens. The administration has said a dog-catching drive will soon be launched in the village to prevent such incidents in future.
