Horror in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar: Acid hurled at 13-year-old girl cycling home from school, police launch a search operation to nab the accused

A shocking incident has come to light from the Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra, where a 13-year-old girl suffered serious facial burns after an unknown person threw acid on her. The attack took place on Tuesday, 17th March, in Vadgaon Pan village of Sangamner taluka.

According to police, the Class 6 student was returning home from school around noon when the incident happened. She was cycling alone on a narrow ‘kuccha’ road passing through farms, which is about 3 to 4 km from her school. Sangamner Deputy Superintendent of Police Kunal Sonawane said, “The girl was bicycling home… an unidentified person threw the corrosive substance at her face and fled the scene.”

After the attack, the girl started screaming in pain, following which her parents and nearby villagers rushed to help her. She was quickly taken to a hospital in Loni, where she is currently undergoing treatment. Officials said she has suffered around 7% burn injuries.

Police launch a search operation

Based on a complaint filed by the girl’s mother, Sangamner taluka police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to acid attack and wrongful restraint. Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge has formed multiple teams to investigate the case.

Police are now scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and speaking to locals in an effort to identify and catch the accused, who is still on the run.

The incident has drawn strong reactions from political leaders. Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare called it a “horrendous incident” and said, “Treatment is underway. I have spoken to the SP of Ahilyanagar, and the police are making every effort to trace the culprit…”

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe condemned the attack, calling it a shocking incident, and directed police to arrest the accused at the earliest, stressing that strict punishment is necessary to prevent such crimes in the future.

Sangamner MLA Amol Khatal said he raised the issue in the Assembly and highlighted that the girl belongs to a poor family. He added, “financial aid would be provided… and all her treatment costs would be borne by govt.”
