A violent clash erupted between two groups in Mumbai’s Goregaon (Dindoshi area) on Sunday night, leaving several people injured after a group of Muslim youths attacked Hindu devotees undertaking a religious procession. The dispute reportedly stemmed from bhajan or Hindu religious songs chanted during the religious procession. Police responded swiftly, dispersing the mob and arresting eight individuals by midnight.
The incident occurred in the Santosh Nagar Market area during a Mariam Mata Shobha Yatra (religious procession). According to reports, tensions escalated when Islamists objected to the religious procession, leading to vandalism of a pandal and assault on participants, including Bajrang Dal members. Eyewitness accounts claim that slogans were raised during the attack, further aggravating the situation.

Police rushed to the spot upon receiving information and brought the situation under control. CCTV footage helped identify the accused, leading to prompt arrests. A mild lathi charge was carried out to disperse the crowd as violence intensified. Three Bajrang Dal workers were reportedly injured and are currently undergoing treatment at a trauma care hospital in Jogeshwari.
In a significant follow-up action, authorities found that several accused were residing in illegal constructions. Acting on prior complaints, the municipal body launched a demolition drive on Monday morning under heavy police protection. Bulldozers were deployed to clear unauthorised encroachments, with officials stating that the action is part of an ongoing effort to reclaim public spaces and enforce the law.
Following the incident, a heavy police deployment has turned the Santosh Nagar area into a high-security zone. While the situation is currently under control, tensions remain, and further investigation is underway. A total of 8 people have been arrested thus far, and efforts are ongoing to nab others involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya is expected to visit the site and participate in a Hanuman Chalisa recitation later today. His proposed visit comes amid heightened tensions following the attack and the crackdown on illegal structures. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further escalation.
