Pakistan cargo plane carrying 5 crew members goes missing near Karachi after reporting navigation failure; search operation underway

A large search operation is underway after a Pakistan cargo aircraft carrying five crew members went missing off the coast of Karachi on Tuesday night, 7th June. Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority said teams from the navy, air force and other rescue agencies have been deployed to locate the aircraft.

The plane lost contact before reaching Karachi

The missing aircraft, a Boeing 737 operated by K2 Airways, was flying from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Karachi. According to aviation officials, the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers at around 9:21 pm local time (16:21 GMT) on Tuesday while approaching its destination.

Officials said the aircraft had reported a navigation system problem just minutes before communication was lost. Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 also showed that the plane experienced sudden altitude changes before entering a steep descent.

Airline confirms crew details

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 8th June, K2 Airways confirmed that five crew members were on board the aircraft. The Karachi-based private cargo airline, which was established in 2018, said it is fully cooperating with the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and other government agencies involved in the search.

The airline also said it is hoping for the safe return of its crew members and continues to pray for their safety.

Pakistan’s last major air crash

The incident has brought back memories of Pakistan’s last major aviation accident in 2020. In that crash, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) passenger plane went down while attempting to land at Karachi airport. Out of the 99 people on board, only two survived.
