National Song Vande Mataram completes 150 years: PM Modi to launch year-long commemoration on Friday, to release stamp and coin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch a year-long celebration marking 150 years of India’s national song “Vande Mataram” on November 7, 2025. The event will take place at 9:30 AM at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The year-long celebrations will run from November 7, 2025, to November 7, 2026, across the country.

During the program, PM Modi will release a special commemorative stamp and coin to honour the song. A key highlight will be the mass singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” at around 9:50 AM. People from all walks of life will join in at public places nationwide, along with the main event in Delhi.

The Sanskrit song “Vande Mataram” was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on November 7, 1875, during Akshaya Navami. It first appeared in the literary journal Bangadarshan, which was a part ofhis novel Anandamath. The song portrays India as a divine mother full of strength and prosperity. It played a big role in India’s freedom struggle, inspiring unity and pride.

Vande Mataram was the anthem used by freedom fighters, used in meetings and processions during the freedom movement. In the year 1896, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore sang the poem for the first time at the Kolkata session of the Indian National Congress. It was officially adopted as the national song by the Constituent Assembly of India on 24th January 1950. At that event, Dr Rajendra Prasad had declared that Vande Mataram should be honoured equally with the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana.
