Punjab: Law student kills woman classmate inside classroom, attempts suicide after shooting

On 9th February, a woman law student was shot dead inside a classroom at a private college in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district. The incident took place in the morning. After shooting the woman student, the accused turned the gun on himself. The entire incident was captured on the classroom CCTV camera.

Shooting inside classroom before classes began

The incident took place at Mai Bhago Law College in Usma village in Tarn Taran district. Police have identified the accused as Prince Raj, a resident of Mallian village. The victim has been identified as Sandeep Kaur, a resident of Naushehra Pannuan. Both were first year law students, aged around 19 to 20 years.

According to police, the shooting occurred just as classes were about to begin. CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral on social media, where Prince is seen entering the classroom with a bag on his back and speaking briefly with Sandeep Kaur and another woman student. The three later sat on benches at the rear of the classroom.

Moments later, Prince Raj is seen standing up, opening his bag and taking out a firearm. He then turned towards Sandeep Kaur and shot her at point blank range. As she collapsed to the floor, the accused immediately placed the gun to his own head and fired. He fell to the ground with serious injuries.

Panic among students, investigation underway

The footage further showed students inside the classroom panicking and running out immediately after the gunshots. Sandeep Kaur died on the spot. Prince Raj was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagbir Singh confirmed that the woman student succumbed to her injuries and said the accused remains under treatment. The victim’s body has been sent for postmortem.

Sandeep Kaur’s mother questioned how a student was allowed to enter the college premises with a firearm and demanded strict action.

The motive behind the shooting is yet to be established. Police said CCTV footage from the campus is being examined as part of the investigation.
