Rajasthan: 150 kg ammonium nitrate, explosive cartridges and wire seized from a car in Tonk, two persons arrested

On Wednesday (31st December), the Tonk District Special Team (DST) in Rajasthan revealed that they had seized 150 kg of ammonium nitrate from a Maruti Ciaz car. An investigation into the reason behind the transportation of such a huge amount of explosive material is underway. The recovery of explosives weeks after the Delhi blast has raised alarm in Rajasthan.

Speaking about the matter, Tonk Deputy Superintendent of Police Mritunjay Mishra said, “There has been a massive action by the DST team led by DST in-charge Om Prakash today. There was a Maruti Ciaz car which was coming from Bundi towards Tonk. The DST received information about the vehicle and intercepted it within the Barooni police station limits and seized explosives from the vehicle.”

He added, “The explosive was 150 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, which was hidden in urea sacks. Apart from this, 200 explosive cartridges and 1,100 metres of wire were also seized by the police.”

In addition to recovering the explosives, the police also arrested two natives of Bundi, Surendra, son of Bhanwarlal and a native of Bundi and Surendra Mochi, son of Dhuli Lal.

Since ammonium nitrate is used for explosions, the authorities are investigating why the arrested men were transporting the explosive material and where, in addition to finding out if other persons are also involved in the matter.

When asked about whether the explosive substance was being transported for mining purposes or for other purposes in view of New Year’s Eve, the police said that all angles are being investigated.

It must be recalled that in the November 10 Delhi Islamic terror attack, ammonium nitrate was used by Dr Umar Un Nabi to blow up his car near the Red Fort. The explosion resulted in the killing of over 15 people. During the investigation of that case, the authorities recovered around 2,900 kilograms of ammonium nitrate.
