Rajya Sabha elections: NDA set to win all 3 seats from Assam unopposed as no nomination filed by opposition

Three candidates backed by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Assam, following the closure of the nomination filing period today, with no opposition challengers entering the fray.

The candidates, Jogen Mohan and Terash Gowala from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Pramod Boro, president of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), filed their nomination papers on Thursday at the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati. They submitted their documents in the presence of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a prominent BJP leader and former chief minister of the state.

Jogen Mohan, a senior BJP figure and current Cabinet Minister in the Assam government handling portfolios including Transport, Hill Area Development, and Indigenous & Tribal Faith, is currently representing the party from the Mahmora constituency as an MLA. Terash Gowala, another BJP MLA from Duliajan, is known for his grassroots connect in upper Assam. Pramod Boro is the chief of UPPL, an NDA ally, and a former Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council.

Opposition parties, including the Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), didn’t file any nomination because of their insufficient numerical strength in the 126-member Assam Assembly. The ruling NDA coalition, led by the BJP with support from allies like AGP and UPPL, commands a comfortable majority, making it mathematically impossible for the opposition to field a viable contest.

The terms of the three retiring Rajya Sabha members from Assam, Bhubaneswar Kalita and Rameswar Teli of the BJP and opposition-backed independent Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, are set to expire on April 9, 2026. Assam has a total of seven Rajya Sabha seats, and these biennial elections are part of the nationwide process for 37 seats across 10 states, scheduled for polling on March 16, 2026.

Since no other candidates filed nominations by the deadline and assuming the papers are found valid during scrutiny, the three NDA nominees will be declared elected unopposed, strengthening the ruling alliance’s representation in the Upper House.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the nominees and expressed confidence in their unopposed victory. This uncontested victory underscores the BJP-led NDA’s strong hold in Assam ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
