US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he plans to visit India next year, saying his ongoing trade talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi are going very well. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, 6th November, the President praised Modi as a great friend and stated that India is reducing oil imports from Russia.
Trump said he and Modi have spoken several times recently and that the talks between the two nations are moving in a positive direction. “He largely stopped buying oil from Russia. Prime Minister Modi is a great man and a friend of mine. He wants me to visit India, and we’ll work that out. I will be going,” Trump said when asked about his travel plans. When pressed further about the timing, Trump said, “It could be, yes,” confirming that a trip next year is on the table.
His remarks come as Washington and New Delhi continue their trade discussions. The United States recently imposed a 50 % tariff, along with an additional 25% in duties, on several Indian imports. Officials in Washington said the move was linked to India’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil.
White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt said the President remains fully committed to strengthening ties with India, describing it as a critical partner for the United States. Leavitt added that Trump spoke with Prime Minister Modi a few weeks ago when he celebrated Diwali in the Oval Office alongside several Indian-American officials. She said the President feels positive about the direction of the relationship and wants to resolve any trade issues in a friendly way.
