Months after striking down global tariffs, the US Supreme Court has overturned President Donald Trump’s bid to end birthright citizenship for immigrants. In a 6-3 ruling, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that children born in America “to parents unlawfully or temporarily present” are “citizens at birth” under the 14th Amendment.
Earlier this year, Trump ended the US birthright citizenship through an executive order, contending that the children of illegal immigrants and some temporary visitors were not “subject to the jurisdiction thereof”, and thus not eligible for birthright citizenship.
However, the recent ruling by a six-judge bench, with five judges, including Chief Justice Roberts, agreed that Trump’s executive order violates the Constitution’s 14th Amendment.
Separately, Justice Brett Kavanaugh stated that the order is in violation of federal law.
After the US Supreme Court inflicted a massive blow to Trump’s immigration agenda, the US President expressed his frustration with a bit of sarcasm, congratulating China.

“I would like to congratulate President Xi, and the Great Country of China, on their massive Birthright Citizenship WIN!” he wrote.
