On 30th May, national-level para-athlete Chirag Tyagi was found dead in Ghaziabad days after he qualified for the Asian Para Games by winning gold in the 400-metre race at a national championship in Bengaluru.

Tyagi, a resident of Basantpur Sathla village in Muradanagar, was found dead in the Sai Upvan area under Kotwali police station limits. Police said in a statement that the body was recovered after information was received that a person was lying dead in the Sai Kunj area. Upon reaching the spot, police took the body into custody and identified the deceased as 24-year-old Chirag Tyagi.
Police added that he had left his hostel in Delhi for his village earlier that day. The body was sent for post-mortem examination.
Fellow para-athlete detained
In a statement, police said that it appeared that Tyagi had been shot dead. Police checked the CCTV footage of the area and arrested one suspect, another para-athlete, Yash Khatik. Police said that both of them practised together earlier. According to police, the motive appeared to be anger over the cancellation of the suspect’s qualification after Tyagi’s complaint regarding document verification.
Both Tyagi and Khatik participated under the blind category. Khatik reportedly told police that Tyagi had filed a complaint against him over document verification, due to which his qualification was cancelled. Police stated that he was angry over this and allegedly shot Tyagi dead to take revenge.
Police teams have been sent to recover the pistol allegedly used in the murder. The police are also examining the possible involvement of other accused persons in the murder.
