On Friday (15th May), West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari suspended three IPS officers on charges of mishandling of the 2024 RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. The suspended officers are Vineet Goyal, the then Kolkata Police Commissioner, Abhishek Gupta, the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), and Indira Mukherjee, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).
Addressing a press conference in Nabanna, Chief Minister Adhikari said that the suspended IPS officers allegedly offered a bribe to the family of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. They also conducted press conferences without written orders. CM Adhikari added that now a departmental enquiry will be conducted against Vineet Goyal, Abhishek Gupta, and Indira Mukherjee.
In connection with the RG Kar incident, we have initiated an investigation specifically against senior police officers such as Kolkata CP Vineet Kumar Goyal and other officials. There are also allegations of mishandling the case; furthermore, it is alleged that two officials attempted to offer money to the Abhaya family. Now, all officials associated with this case at the time have been placed under suspension, as transparency in this process is absolutely essential.
Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta have been suspended. After a preliminary investigation, we are suspending three IPS officers because, during an investigation, they should not be on duty. They will be allowed to present their side,” the West Bengal Chief Minister said.
It must be recalled that in August 2024, a junior doctor was brutally raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The accused, Sanjay Roy, was later sentenced to life for rape and murder.
Earlier this year, Ratna Debnath, the mother of the deceased victim, vowed to uproot the TMC regime from West Bengal due to its mishandling of her daughter’s case. She contested from the Panihati seat in the recently concluded state assembly elections on a BJP ticket, and defeated TMC’s Tirthankar Ghosh.
