The West Bengal Police on Monday (27th April) arrested four Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers after crude bombs were hurled and shots were fired outside the residence of BJP candidate Pawan Singh at Bhatpara in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Sunday night. The arrestees, Koushik Das, Sikander Prasad, Gopal Routh, and Shyamdev Shaw, were reportedly nabbed during the raids carried out at the residences of 15 accused men.
“Following raids in a dozen locations in association with DCP Barrackpore, four people, namely Koushik Das, Sikander Prasad, Gopal Routh and Shyamdev Shaw, were arrested. The remaining accused persons have absconded. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend them, including continued raids targeting individuals, including Firoz, Munjal Rajak, and others,” the police said. The police are looking for the remaining accused who are on the run.
As per reports, the series of events that led to the arrests started with tension erupting in the Jagaddal area when a candidate from Jagaddal assembly constituency went to file an FIR at the Jagaddal police station. According to police, a violent mob of about 200 people gathered at the police station and created a ruckus. To rescue the candidate at the police station, another candidate arrived, after which the mob turned more aggressive. The situation was eventually brought under control after police intervention, and both the candidates left along with their supporters.

Subsequently, tensions flared up near the residence of BJP candidate Pawan Singh, where the mob hurled crude bombs and fired gunshots. A CISF jawan, Yogesh Sharma, who was part of the security detail of Singh, was injured in the shooting. He sustained a bullet injury in his leg and was admitted to a hospital. The Election Commission sought a detailed report on the incident.
A local TMC worker alleged that TMC workers, who went to file a complaint regarding the alleged attack on one TMC worker, were attacked at the Jagaddal police station. The BJP, on the other hand, said that its workers were targeted and the CISF jawan was injured in an attack carried out by TMC workers.
Notably, the second phase of the West Bengal state assembly elections will be held on 29th April.
