Veteran actor Dharmendra (born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol) passed away today at the age of 89 at his residence in Juhu, Mumbai, following a prolonged period of illness.
Earlier this month, Dharmendra was admitted to the renowned Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after developing respiratory complications. He was later discharged and had been recovering at home under medical supervision. On the morning of 24 November, he breathed his last peacefully at his residence. A private cremation ceremony was held at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai, in the presence of close family members and a few industry colleagues who gathered to pay their final respects.
Dharmendra’s contribution to Hindi cinema spanned more than six decades, making him one of the most enduring icons of Indian films. He made his acting debut in 1960 with the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and rose to fame with powerful performances in films that defined an era. His portrayal of Veeru in the cult classic Sholay remains etched in public memory, along with memorable roles in Phool Aur Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta and Chupke Chupke.
Known for his unmatched versatility, he moved effortlessly between romantic, action and later character-driven roles. Over the course of his career, he appeared in more than 300 films, becoming one of the most prolific and admired actors in Indian cinema.
In 2012, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian award. These honours reflected not just his popularity, but the deep respect he commanded across generations of actors and audiences alike.
Dharmendra is survived by his first wife Prakash Kaur and his second wife, actress Hema Malini. He leaves behind a large family that includes his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, among others.
