Fake Aadhaar, Rs 95,000 broker fee and trafficking route: How a Bangladeshi woman ended up in Assam

A 35-year-old Bangladeshi woman, identified as Rumia Akhter from Cumilla district of Bangladesh, was found wandering late Wednesday night (24th December) on a road in Gauripur, Dhubri district of Assam. Locals who noticed her suspicious behaviour around 9:30 p.m. informed the police and handed her over to the Gauripur Police Station.

Woman says she was trafficked to India

According to media reports, Akhter told the police she wanted to return to her hometown in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Since no immediate arrangement could be made, she was temporarily kept at a nursing home in Gauripur. Later, a female constable was sent by Gauripur Police to look after her.

Speaking to media, Rumia shared her ordeal. She said that two months ago, she was brought to India through Sylhet along with eight other women after paying ₹95,000 to a broker. “The broker made a fake Aadhaar card for me under the name Jhumur Roy, but my real name is Rumia Akhter. All of us were sold at different places in Delhi, but I managed to escape and somehow reached Guwahati and then Gauripur while trying to get back to Sylhet,” she said.

Rumia further added that before reaching Gauripur, she had tried police officials in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, but were directed to Assam Police instead.

Gauripur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Dibya Kamal Dutta confirmed that a case has already been registered. “The woman is now being given to the Dhubri District Border Police, who will take efforts for her safe return to Bangladesh.”
