Trump announces India-US agreed to a trade deal, reduces reciprocal tariffs from 25% to 18%

US President Donald J. Trump on Monday claimed that India has agreed to significantly alter its energy procurement and trade policies following a conversation with PM Modi, according to a statement posted by Trump on his social media account on Truth Social.

In the post, President Trump said he spoke with PM Modi earlier in the day, describing him as a “powerful and respected leader.” Trump said the discussions covered bilateral trade issues as well as efforts to end the ongoing Russia–Ukraine War.

Trump claimed that Modi agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil and instead significantly increase energy imports from the United States and potentially Venezuela, a move Trump said would contribute to ending the Ukraine conflict. India has consistently maintained that its energy sourcing decisions are based on national interest and market dynamics.

The US President further stated that Washington would reduce its reciprocal tariff rate on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, while India would move toward eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers on American products.

Trump also asserted that India committed to substantially increasing purchases of US goods under a “Buy American” approach, including energy, technology, agricultural products, and coal, with total purchases allegedly exceeding USD 500 billion.

President Trump concluded by stating that India–US relations would grow stronger and said that both leaders were focused on delivering results.

As of publication, no official confirmation has been issued by the Indian government regarding the claims made by President Trump. The Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of External Affairs have not released any statement validating the assertions outlined in the post.
