PM’s Lok Sabha address was cancelled due to credible information of Congress planning ‘unforeseen incident’ near PM’s seat, says speaker Om Birla

In an unprecedented development, the Lok Sabha was adjourned yesterday without the address of the Prime Minister on the debate on Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address. Today, speaker Om Birla revealed that it was done to avoid an ‘unforeseen event’ planned by the Congress MP on the PM.

He said that he requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to not come to the house as there were credible reports of attempts to create an unwarranted situation in the house. The speaker said that several MPs misbehaved in the house yesterday, and he had prior information that opposition MPs led by Congress would attempt to disrupt the Prime Minister’s address. Om Birla said, “I received credible information that several members of the Congress party could have approached the Prime Minister’s seat and caused an unforeseen incident.”

He further said, “If such an incident had occurred, it would have severely damaged the dignity of the nation. To avoid this, I urged the Prime Minister not to come to Parliament”. He added that the prime minister avoided the creation of an unpleasant situation in the parliament by accepting his request not come to the house.

Om Birla told the opposition MPs that if they come with posters and pamphlets, the house will not run, and it will not run tomorrow either if it is repeated. He noted how several women MPs had approached the PM’s chair yesterday. He said, “It has never been the tradition of this House to bring political differences to the office of the Speaker. What happened yesterday is a black spot in the history of Parliament.”

The speaker made these comments while adjourning the house at 3 PM today for the day after it was adjourned several times in the day due to sloganeering of opposition MPs. After convening for the day at 11 AM, the house was adjourned immediately after reconvening at 12 PM and 2 PM.  The opposition is protesting the refusal of the speaker to allow Rahul Gandhi to cite content from an unpublished book by former Army Chief MM Naravane.

While the speaker talked about Congress MPs planning an ‘unforeseen incident’ with the PM, senior journalist Pallavi Ghosh has claimed that there was information that Congress was physically planning to attack PM in Lok Sabha. She added that woman MPs were sent near the PM as a cover for this attack yesterday, she claimed.

Ghosh posted on X, “Parliament sources – It is unprecedented that PM did not speak in the Lok Sabha in the motion of thanks to Presidents address. There was a clear information that Congress was physically planning to attack PM in Lok Sabha and hence women MPs were sent as a cover measure for this. Hence the Speaker decided to adjourn the office, despite the PM being in parliament and available to speak.”

The Lok Sabha saw unprecedented chaos on Wednesday. Several women MPs from the opposition blocked the seats in the treasury bench, including the seat of the Prime Minister. They were holding a large banner saying “Do what is right.”

While PM Modi’s speech in Lok Sabha was cancelled yesterday, he is scheduled to address the Rajya Sabha today evening.
