Four Indian medical students injured in knife attack by neo-Nazi teenager in Russia, attacker raised Holocaust slogans and drew Swastika with blood on wall

In a disturbing incident, four Indians were injured in a knife attack at a university in Ufa, in the Bashkortostan Republic in Russia, on Saturday (7th February). Confirming the incident, the Indian Embassy in Russia said that it is monitoring the situation and was in touch with the Russian authorities. A 15-year-old boy has been detained in connection with the attack.

“The Indian Embassy in Russia said that, in an unfortunate incident of an attack, four Indian students have been injured. The Embassy is in touch with the Russian authorities. Officials from the Consulate of India in Kazan have been sent to Ufa to provide assistance to the injured students,” the Indian embassy wrote on X.

A statement released by the Russian Federal Health Ministry regarding the incident reportedly said that the four people were receiving medical treatment and that one of them was in a critical condition.

According to the Russian Interior Ministry, the attack was carried out by a 15-year-old boy armed with a knife. He entered a dormitory of the State Medical University in Ufa and stabbed the students there, injuring about six people, including two policemen. The attacker has also been admitted to a local children’s hospital in serious condition. A high-level investigation has been launched by authorities in Ufa into the incident.

“The attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. Furthermore, the suspect also inflicted bodily harm on himself,” Russia’s interior ministry spokesperson Maj Gen Irina Volk said.

As per Russian federal health ministry, he injured people are currently receiving medical treatment. One among them is reportedly in critical condition.

AIMSA condemns the incident

Condemning the incident, the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) raised concerns about the attack on the Indian medical students in Ufa.

Attacker linked to the Sparrows Crew

Quoting the Baza Telegram channel, a report by the Republic said that the attacker is a member of the National Socialism / White Power (NS/WP) Crew, also known as the Sparrows Crew. It is said to be a violent neo-Nazi group, which was classified as a terrorist organisation by the Russian Supreme Court in 2021. The organisation is also reportedly linked to attacks on journalists.

It is also reported that the attacker shouted Holocaust slogans during the attack and that a Swastika was found drawn on a dormitory wall, allegedly using a victim’s blood.

As per authorities, the attacker didn’t surrender when police arrived and stabbed two police officers while resisting arrest. Interior Ministry spokesperson Major General Irina Volk said the attacker also injured himself during the incident. After he was subdued and detained, he was admitted to a children’s hospital and is said to be in serious condition.
