On 7th April, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved a notable increase in the honorarium of Shiksha Mitra and part-time instructors. Earlier, Chief Minister of the state, Yogi Adityanath, had made an announcement in this regard. The decision of the UP government will benefit lakhs of education workers in the state and strengthen the school education system.
The Cabinet has approved the proposal to increase the monthly honorarium of Shiksha Mitras from Rs 10,000 to Rs 18,000. Notably, the honorarium was last fixed in 2017. Similarly, part-time instructors will now receive Rs 17,000, which is a significant increase from the previous amount of Rs 9,000. The revised honorarium will be applicable from 1st April 2026. The enhanced amount will be reflected in payments scheduled in May.
Financial impact and implementation
This decision is expected to impose an additional financial burden of over Rs 1,475.27 crore on the state government. The revised honorarium will be payable for 11 months in a year. The decision is in line with the announcement made by CM Yogi during the first session of the UP Legislative Assembly in 2026.
In a statement, Basic Education Minister Sandeep Singh said that there are 1,42,929 Shiksha Mitra working in the state. Among them, 1,29,332 were receiving honorarium under the central government’s Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan in a 60:40 funding ratio. A proposal will be sent to the Government of India for the central share under the scheme.
He added that in case approval is not received from the Centre, the state will bear additional expenditure of Rs 1,138.12 crore arising from the increased honorarium.
Relief for remaining Shiksha Mitra and instructors
There are 13,597 Shiksha Mitra who are fully funded by the state. For their increased honorarium, the state will bear an additional expenditure of Rs 119.65 crore. Singh further added that 24,717 part time instructors are currently working in 13,769 upper primary schools across UP. The hike in their honorarium will result in an additional financial burden of Rs 217.50 crore on the state.
